CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Valais, Switzerland

Somewhere in the Pennine Alps

March 7, 7:00 a.m.

THE ENGINEER MOVED at a steady pace through the deep snow, following the tracks left from his snowshoes nearly thirty-six hours before.

He was breathing hard as the sun began its ascent over the treacherous landscape to his east—an orange globe of light creeping its way over a white, glacial tapestry.

For the first time in nearly five months, the engineer could feel the seasons finally beginning to change, the days becoming longer, the volume of snow collecting on the glaciers starting to decline.

It would be an early spring after such a mild winter.

The straps of his heavy backpack cutting through his shoulders, the engineer stopped, planted his ski poles in the snow, and took in the beautiful scenery—the scenery that reminded him so much of his childhood home in the Alborz Mountains in northern Iran.

The nearly seven-mile climb down to the Swiss mountain village of Arolla the night before had been difficult. The engineer’s muscles had withered in the last five months that he and his two brothers had been cooped up in the desolate alpine hut on the north side of the frozen Lac de Mauvoisin.

The alpine hut, resting in the valley north of the lake, had been stocked full of supplies for the winter, with enough food, firewood, and even an encrypted satellite internet connection to keep the engineer and his two brothers sustained during the winter. After all, their job wasn’t only to lie low, but to prepare themselves for the mission thrust upon them by Allah.

Since their rescue from the Yemeni prison last September the engineer and his eight other Quds Force brothers had been split into groups of three, then given new identities and instructions to get to their predetermined destinations to prepare for the upcoming mission.

But most importantly, they had been given a phone—a black smartphone that would be used to receive directives from Colonel Ghorbani and General Soleimani for their task ahead.

The engineer had been grouped with the bomb maker, and the pilot—and their methods for getting into Europe had been to enter via cargo ship from Tunisia.

Docking in Italy, they crossed into Switzerland a few weeks later, and then into the Alps where they were ordered to spend the winter in the desolate alpine hut.

For the last five months, as the three men worked and planned, they sat by the black smartphone—keeping it charged, awaiting their next orders.

Those orders finally came two days before, by text, stating that the engineer would need to take a seven-mile trek to the Swiss alpine town of Arolla that night to receive a package for the next phase of the mission.

Knowing he had been selected to make the trip because of his experience as a climber in his youth, the engineer had collected his gear, checked the weather forecast on his laptop, and then tested the snowpack for avalanche danger before beginning his trek down to Arolla that very night.
